You can’t change everything overnight so give yourself plenty of time to decide how you want to approach the situation.
Budget Efficiently
As a lot of people say, time is money. Regardless of whether the renovation is a DIY job or you’re paying someone else to do it, budgeting is vital. Renovations can be expensive if you don’t do your research. You don’t want to spend more than is required so always have a look at several different options before buying. This also applies to labour costs as different companies will have different pricing structures.
Budgeting from the offset will allow you to make savings further down the line. Keep a list of everything you spend money on and look at ways in which you can reduce costs. Sometimes you won’t even realize what you are spending your money on!
Consider Health and Safety
If people are still going to be living within the property then you need to make sure their safety is protected. A risk assessment is always a good idea and will allow you to identify the most likely risks and put a plan in place to minimize them. One of the most common health and safety problems you will come across when renovating a home is the presence of asbestos. You should consult your local expert for an asbestos survey who will be able to carry out some tests to help identify any asbestos in your property. Other important safety issues to consider include heights (if using scaffolding or a ladder) and any use of paint or chemicals.
Creativity is Key
Don’t stick to the same styles and colors – why not mix it up? A renovation is a perfect time to get your creative hat on and you can try out a variety of different things. Whether that be painting the walls a different color or replacing all of your appliances with brand-new ones.
Take Your Time
Never rush anything. Always give yourself more time than you think it will take, as tasks usually spill over. Rushing always leads to mistakes and errors. Be patient and honest with yourself as the renovations take place. If you need the painter in for an extra day, book it in. If the renovation isn’t going to be finished until a week later than planned then just accept it and work with all parties collaboratively to get the project finished.
And the most important thing of all. make sure you are happy with the finished product! There’s nothing worse than spending a lot of time and money on something only for it ends in a disappointing light and not be a reflection of your original plans.
