If you spend a lot of time working in a garage or warehouse, you may have noticed that it can get a little drafty and the energy bills can be high. If you store products or valuables in a space with a rolling door, you may want to make sure that the temperature is consistent all year long. Fortunately,  you can insulate rolling doors.

Rolling doors can help regulate the temperatures of space. They can trap in hot or cold air and they can stop hot or cold air from getting in. An insulated rolling door will have overhead coils that are designed to keep air from entering or exiting a building. Buildings with insulated doors are actually quieter as the installation will block out noise. It can also add to the durability of a door because you are adding an extra layer of material.

Insulated doors can benefit any climate-controlled building. It makes it much easier to attain and maintain the desired temperature. Once you insulate your doors, you are likely to notice a major decrease in your energy bills. Temperature control accounts for about 50% of the average energy bill, so that is no small accomplishment.

Employees with hayfever or asthma will be able to work in comfort because An insulated door will keep pollen and other allergens at bay.

What Kind of Material to Use

When you are shopping around for door installation, you will have a couple of materials to choose from. It helps to know a bit about how insulation quality is measured, the benefits and drawbacks of each of the potential materials.

The quality of installation is measured by thermal resistance and thermal conductivity.

Thermal resistance (R-force) measures the amount of temperature distance between two faces of a material to the pace of heat flow per unit space. Thermal conductivity measures a material’s ability to conduct heat.

Polyethylene Insulation

Polyethylene is created by mixing an isocyanate with a polyol blend, They are mixed to form a stiff cellular foam matrix. It creates a lightweight polymer that works very well as an installation material.

Polyethylene has a high thermal resistance rating and the lowest thermal conductivity. If you use this type of installation, your building will be energy efficient and comfortable.

Polystyrene is a polymer that is made of monomer styrene which is more commonly known as styrofoam. When used as door insulation, it is glued onto the front and the back of the doors inside the panel. It last longer than Polyethylene because it maintains it’s shape longer and does not degrade as easily.  However, it does not fit as well into the end corners of the individual panels and this can create air leaks. This may decrease the R-value for the door.

Overall, most people think polyethylene is the better option although it is a bit more expensive. Be sure to ask for a closed-cell polyethylene, which will not degrade as quickly as the regular stuff.
